Who is counselling & psychotherapy for?
Counselling and psychotherapy is for anyone wanting support, clarity, or change. People seek therapy for a wide range of reasons including relationship patterns, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, self-esteem challenges, emotional overwhelm, or simply a desire to understand themselves more deeply.
Counsellors and psychotherapists provide a therapeutic space where clients can safely explore their inner world, develop emotional awareness, and begin to shift long-standing patterns that are no longer serving them.
What is the difference between a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist and psychiatrist?
Counsellors and psychotherapists provide talk-based therapeutic support aimed at improving emotional wellbeing, enhancing self-understanding, and fostering healthier relational and behavioural patterns. Psychotherapy often involves a deeper exploration of emotional experiences, developmental history, and internal processes. Training standards vary across providers, and many counsellors and psychotherapists hold postgraduate qualifications. Claire holds a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy and is registered with PACFA and ACA.
Psychologists are trained in the assessment, formulation, and treatment of mental health concerns. Their training emphasises evidence-based interventions, measurement, and diagnosis. Many psychologists provide therapy, while others specialise in areas such as clinical assessment, behavioural interventions, or applied research.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. Their training allows them to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and provide medical management. Some psychiatrists also offer psychotherapy within their scope of practice.
All four professions play valuable roles in supporting mental health and wellbeing. They differ in their training pathways, areas of focus, and the scope of services they provide. Allowing clients to choose the type of support that best aligns with their needs and preferences.
Do I need to come in person?
No. Claire offers both in-person sessions at the Joplin Clinic in Surry Hills and telehealth appointments for those who prefer online therapy or have accessibility or scheduling needs.
You are welcome to choose whichever format feels most supportive. Many clients move fluidly between both options depending on their week.
How do I make a booking if I am a new client?
New clients can book directly, no referral is needed. Appointments can be made through Claire’s online booking system (check the top right hand corner of this webpage) or by contacting the Joplin Clinic reception team.
What therapeutic approaches does Claire use?
Claire tailors therapy to each client using evidence-based modalities including Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), and the Gottman Method (Level 1 trained).
Her approach is collaborative and steady, helping clients explore how past experiences shape current patterns, deepen emotional understanding, and build practical tools for clarity, self-compassion, and meaningful change.
What can I expect in my first session?
The first session is a calm and paced introduction focused on understanding what has brought you to therapy. Claire will ask about your current concerns, relevant history, and your hopes for the work ahead.
You are invited to share at a pace that feels comfortable. There is no pressure to disclose everything at once, the goal is to help you feel grounded, respected, and understood as you begin the therapeutic process
How do I know if Claire is the right therapist for me?
A strong therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in effective therapy. Claire’s presence is warm, attuned, and focused on creating emotional safety and clarity.
You may be the right fit if her style helps you feel supported, understood, and able to explore vulnerability without pressure. If at any point you feel unsure, Claire welcomes open conversation and can assist with referrals to ensure you receive the support that feels best for you.
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No, a referral is not required. Clients can self-refer and book directly online or through the clinic.
